Traders, shop owners, and vendors in the Al-Sabra market, located in the eastern part of Ibb Governorate, have raised serious concerns about abusive practices by members of a Houthi militia checkpoint. These actions clearly exceed the authority typically granted to security checkpoints, according to complaints circulating among the local business community.
Local traders report that Houthi checkpoint members impose financial levies on vendors, compelling them to provide goods without compensation, particularly affecting qat sellers. Additionally, these militia members interfere in disputes within the market, preventing parties from seeking resolution through official channels. Instead, they force individuals to accept their arbitration services for a fee.
Traders have also highlighted the intimidation tactics employed by checkpoint personnel. They threaten citizens and business owners with fabricated reports and accusations if their demands are not met. Such behavior fosters an atmosphere of fear and anxiety among the local population.
These violations occur amid widespread security chaos in Ibb Governorate, which has been under Houthi control since 2014. Complaints regarding the militia’s actions have surged across various districts, reflecting a growing trend of corruption and human rights abuses.
It is crucial for the international community to take urgent steps to pressure the Houthi militia to cease these violations and restore security and stability in Ibb Governorate. Simultaneously, the internationally recognized Yemeni government must enhance its role in protecting citizens and supporting their rights.
