Workshop in Aden Focuses on Women's Summit Recommendations

A workshop took place today in Aden, the temporary capital of Yemen, organized by the Wujud Foundation for Human Security. This event marks the second workshop aimed at following up on the recommendations from the Women’s Summit. The initiative operates in collaboration with UN Women and receives support from the Women, Peace, and Humanitarian Fund.

Objectives of the Workshop

The workshop gathered 30 participants from the governorates of Abyan, Lahij, Aden, Shabwa, and Al-Dhale’e. Its primary goal is to enhance coordination and collaboration among civil society representatives, government entities, and active initiatives in development, human rights, and justice. Participants aim to implement the Women’s Summit recommendations at the local level in the targeted governorates.

Insights from the Women’s Summit Coordinator

Maha Awad, the coordinator of the Women’s Summit and head of the Wujud Foundation, discussed the summit’s objectives and its journey over the past seven years. She highlighted the significant progress made in ensuring women’s presence in national issues, including security, peace, human rights, transitional justice, and leadership development.

UN Women’s Support for Local Efforts

Dina Zorba, the UN Women representative in Yemen, praised the participants for their efforts to incorporate the recommendations from the seventh Women’s Summit into local action plans. She emphasized the UN’s commitment to supporting Yemeni women and recognizing their substantial contributions to advancing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda.

Participant Contributions and Recommendations

The workshop, facilitated by Judge Ishraq Al-Maqtari, provided a platform for attendees to share their observations and suggestions to strengthen the Women’s Summit recommendations. Participants stressed the importance of disseminating previous summit outcomes and forming voluntary executive teams in the governorates to implement these results.

Key Outcomes of the Workshop

The workshop concluded with several actionable mechanisms to implement recommendations related to economic issues, civil space, the release of detainees due to the conflict, reopening main roads, transitional justice, climate issues, and the protection of human rights. These outcomes aim to foster a more inclusive and effective approach to addressing the challenges faced by women in Yemen.
