Police Academy Hosts Training Workshop on Women's Protection

The Police Academy in Sayoun, Hadhramaut Governorate, organized a training workshop today focused on “Guidelines for Protecting Women Victims of Violence and the Role of Police and Security Forces in Enforcing These Guidelines According to International Human Rights Standards.” This initiative, which runs for three days, is a collaborative effort involving the General Administration for Family Protection at the Ministry of Interior, the General Administration of Security and Police in the Wadi Hadhramaut and Desert region, and the International Organization for Criminal Justice Reform. The project aims to enhance the role of female police officers in Yemen, promoting peace and access to justice, with funding from the Government of the Netherlands.

Workshop Objectives and Participants

The workshop targets 30 female police and security personnel, aiming to raise awareness and legal knowledge regarding gender-based violence. Participants will learn about protective measures available under national legislation and international standards. This training is crucial for equipping law enforcement with the necessary skills to address these sensitive issues effectively.

Importance of Capacity Building

Brigadier General Ali Al-Saai, Deputy Director of Security and Police in Wadi Hadhramaut and Desert, emphasized the significance of the workshop in building the capacities of security personnel. He highlighted the need for a comprehensive understanding of the social, legal, and human rights dimensions of violence against women. Al-Saai stated that security is a shared responsibility that requires a professional and humane approach to these critical issues.

Commitment to Training and Development

Lieutenant General Dr. Muthanna Al-Shaibi, Deputy President of the Police Academy, noted the academy’s commitment to developing training programs that enhance the performance of security personnel. He stressed the importance of addressing the needs of vulnerable groups, particularly women and girls. Al-Shaibi described the workshop as a vital step in fostering collaboration with national and international partners.

Advancing Protection Policies

Brigadier General Aliya Saleh, Director General of the Family Protection Department at the Ministry of Interior, affirmed that the workshop aligns with the ministry’s efforts to promote a protective and preventive approach. She highlighted the importance of building the capacities of specialized security personnel and developing security policies in accordance with international standards. Saleh pointed out that the involvement of female police officers reflects a growing recognition of the need to include women in community security and protection systems.

This workshop marks a significant advancement in the ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence and enhance the role of women in law enforcement in Yemen.
