Human Rights Organization Condemns Houthi Siege of Taiz
The Monitoring Organization for Rights and Freedoms has confirmed that the ongoing siege and restrictions on civilian movement in the city of Taiz severely hinder access to food, medicine, education, and healthcare. These actions represent a serious violation of international humanitarian law and human rights law. Depending on the circumstances and available evidence, the actions associated with the siege may amount to war crimes.
Impact on Civilians
In a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), the organization condemned the continued siege imposed on Taiz by Houthi militias, which are supported by the Iranian regime. This siege exacerbates the suffering of more than two and a half million people, including approximately 140,000 displaced individuals. Many of these displaced persons live near conflict lines, facing life-threatening risks and challenges to their livelihoods.
Urgent Call for Action
The organization urged the United Nations envoy to Yemen, the United Nations, and international humanitarian organizations to take immediate action. They called for pressure to lift the siege on Taiz, open roads for civilians, and ensure unobstructed access to humanitarian aid. Additionally, they emphasized the need to secure access to food, water, medicine, education, and healthcare for the population, with special protection for displaced individuals and the most vulnerable groups.
Responsibility to Protect Civilians
The organization stressed that protecting civilians is a legal and humanitarian responsibility. The continued suffering of these individuals without effective international intervention undermines the principles of international law and exacerbates the humanitarian disaster.
