A meeting in Aden discusses price fluctuations and their impact on rising food costs.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Addresses Rising Food Prices in Yemen

Today, in the temporary capital of Aden, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Salem Al-Wali, convened a meeting with various agency heads and directors within the ministry. The discussions focused on recent price fluctuations and their impact on the rising costs of food items in local markets. Participants examined global economic changes, increased production costs, and the surge in shipping expenses, especially due to Houthi attacks on international shipping routes and the Red Sea.

Combating Market Monopoly and Unjust Price Increases

During the meeting, officials emphasized the urgent need to combat monopolistic practices in local markets. They proposed strategies to curb the exploitative behaviors of traders who unjustly raise prices during these extraordinary circumstances. Additionally, the group evaluated current measures and policies aimed at regulating prices, ensuring their effectiveness in protecting consumers in collaboration with relevant authorities.

Enhancing Market Oversight and Enforcement

The meeting underscored the importance of intensifying field oversight in markets. Officials called for strict adherence to established pricing by traders and the necessity of displaying these prices clearly to consumers. They also discussed implementing penalties for those who illegally inflate prices, reinforcing the commitment to consumer protection.

As Yemen faces significant economic challenges, the ministry’s proactive approach aims to stabilize food prices and ensure fair market practices. The ongoing dialogue among officials reflects a strong commitment to safeguarding the interests of consumers and maintaining market integrity.
