Minister of Health Discusses Strengthening Health Sector Support in Yemen with WHO Regional Director

Dr. Qasem Baheeb, Yemen’s Minister of Public Health and Population, met with Dr. Hanan Balkhy, the Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Eastern Mediterranean. Their discussion focused on enhancing collaboration and support for Yemen’s health sector. This meeting took place during the 71st session of the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, held in Doha.

Current Health Status and Challenges in Yemen

During their meeting, Minister Baheeb briefed Dr. Balkhy on the current health situation in Yemen. He highlighted the significant challenges facing the sector and emphasized the crucial role of the WHO office in Yemen. The minister pointed out the importance of ongoing support and development to open new avenues for health initiatives in the country.

Call for Direct Engagement

Minister Baheeb, accompanied by Dr. Ali Al-Walidi, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health for Primary Care, and Dr. Musleh Al-Tawali, the head of the ministry’s technical office, reiterated his invitation for Dr. Balkhy to visit Yemen. He believes that a firsthand look at the health conditions would provide valuable insights for improving healthcare in the country.

WHO’s Commitment to Yemen’s Health Priorities

In response, Dr. Balkhy acknowledged the critical health situation in Yemen and reaffirmed that it remains a top priority for the WHO. She committed to continuing collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing the health sector in the region, underscoring the organization’s dedication to supporting Yemen during these challenging times.

This meeting marks a significant step towards fostering international cooperation and addressing the pressing health needs in Yemen. As the situation evolves, ongoing dialogue between Yemen’s health officials and global health organizations will be essential for driving improvements in healthcare delivery.
