A meeting took place today in the temporary capital of Aden, led by the Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, Salem Al-Saqtri. The gathering focused on the ongoing preparations for the upcoming International Food Security Conference in Yemen, scheduled for October in Saudi Arabia. This event will occur in coordination with the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
The primary aim of the conference is to secure funding to address the pressing food security challenges in Yemen. Additionally, the event seeks to propose sustainable solutions to reduce the food gap affecting the nation.
The meeting included Dr. Nizar Bashihab, the Deputy Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, along with representatives from the Ministries of Agriculture and Fisheries, and Planning and International Cooperation. Participants reviewed the responsibilities assigned to various stakeholders in preparation for the conference. They also discussed coordination mechanisms with relevant international organizations and funding bodies.
The agenda for the conference was a significant topic of discussion. Participants examined the technical and procedural requirements essential for ensuring the success of this critical international event.
Minister Al-Saqtri stressed the importance of focusing on real challenges facing Yemen’s food security in the proposals and working papers to be presented. He urged the need for practical solutions to address the outstanding debts owed to international funds and organizations. This approach aims to open new avenues for funding and facilitate Yemen’s transition from emergency humanitarian response to sustainable development and resilience building.
Al-Saqtri highlighted that the conference represents a genuine opportunity to bring Yemen’s food crisis to the attention of regional and international stakeholders. It aims to foster effective partnerships with donors and international organizations, ensuring the implementation of sustainable development projects. These initiatives will help mitigate the worsening food security crisis exacerbated by war, natural disasters, and global challenges.
