A delegation from Yemen’s Consultation and Reconciliation Authority, led by Vice Chair Jamila Ali Rajea, met with Maurizio Greganti, the Director of the Mediterranean and Middle East Department at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting included members from various committees, including political, economic, social, and transitional justice committees.

Discussion on Yemen’s Political and Economic Situation

During the meeting, participants reviewed the current political and security developments in Yemen. They highlighted the country’s deteriorating economic conditions, exacerbated by the ongoing crisis and the Houthi militia’s attacks on oil export ports. These assaults have also targeted international shipping in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab, as well as civilians in liberated areas.

Emphasis on Humanitarian Assistance and Recovery

The meeting underscored the importance of transitioning humanitarian aid to recovery efforts. Participants stressed the need to collaborate with donors based on the government’s recovery plan and its pathways.

Italy’s Support for Peace in Yemen

Ambassador Maurizio Greganti reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to supporting peace in Yemen and the internationally recognized government represented by the Presidential Leadership Council. His statement reflects Italy’s ongoing diplomatic efforts in the region.

European Union’s Interest in Mediation Efforts

Victoria Florinder, head of the EU External Action mediation support team, emphasized the significance of working with the Consultation and Reconciliation Authority. She praised the Authority’s role in fostering dialogue among political factions to achieve solutions. Florinder noted that the European Union is keen on the success of this initiative, which includes various political components, aiming for a lasting and comprehensive peace in Yemen.

Attendees and Future Cooperation

The meeting also included Gianfranco Petrosilla, Italy’s Special Envoy to Yemen, and Ambassador Frattini, the Italian Foreign Ministry’s Policy and Mediation Coordinator. On the Yemeni side, the meeting featured Asmahan Al-Touqi, Yemen’s Ambassador to Italy. This visit by the Consultation and Reconciliation Authority delegation to Italy aims to enhance cooperation and coordination between the European Union and the Authority.

This meeting marks a significant step in international efforts to address the ongoing crisis in Yemen and promote stability in the region.
