Yemen’s permanent representative to the UN discusses humanitarian issues with the UN Deputy Under-Secretary-General.

Today, Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi, engaged in discussions with Joyce Msuya, the Deputy Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator (OCHA). The two addressed critical issues surrounding the humanitarian situation in Yemen, particularly focusing on the violations committed by Houthi militias and their obstruction of humanitarian operations in areas under their control.
Call for Relocation of UN Agencies to Aden
Ambassador Al-Saadi emphasized the necessity of relocating UN agency offices to the temporary capital, Aden. He argued that this move would enhance the safety of humanitarian staff and improve the effectiveness of ongoing relief operations. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of collective efforts to rally international support and bridge the funding gap for Yemen’s 2025 humanitarian response plan, especially as needs continue to escalate.
Commitment to Humanitarian Cooperation
The ambassador reiterated the Yemeni government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and partnerships with international humanitarian and development agencies operating in Yemen. He assured that the government would provide all necessary facilitation to ensure safe and unhindered access to humanitarian aid across the country. Additionally, he highlighted the government’s proactive measures to address the challenges posed by the Houthi designation as a foreign terrorist organization, which impacts humanitarian and commercial activities.
UN’s Continued Focus on Yemen
In response, Deputy Under-Secretary-General Msuya reaffirmed that Yemen remains a top priority for the United Nations. She outlined ongoing efforts to secure funding and diversify its sources, underscoring the international community’s commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
The discussions between Ambassador Al-Saadi and UN officials reflect a critical moment in Yemen’s humanitarian landscape. As the situation continues to deteriorate, the need for effective international collaboration and support becomes increasingly urgent. The Yemeni government’s commitment to facilitating humanitarian efforts and the UN’s focus on securing funding are essential steps toward alleviating the suffering of millions in Yemen.
