Yemen Participates in Global Transport Connectivity Forum 2025

The Republic of Yemen actively participated today in the Global Transport Connectivity Forum 2025, held in Istanbul, Turkey. The delegation was led by Captain Ali Al-Sabhi, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport for Maritime Affairs and Ports.

Forum Overview

Over three days, the forum will host transport ministers from various countries, representatives from international organizations, financial institutions, and a select group of private sector leaders and experts. The event features more than 20 high-level discussion sessions aimed at enhancing international cooperation in transport and developing global logistics corridors.

Yemen’s Strategic Position

In his speech at the forum, Captain Al-Sabhi emphasized Yemen’s unique geographical position along the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. He stated, "Discussing Yemen in the context of regional and global transport corridors is not just a theoretical ambition; it is a strategic necessity. Yemen serves as a vital link between East and West, overseeing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which is one of the world’s most important waterways, facilitating 12 to 15 percent of global trade."

Addressing Maritime Security Challenges

Captain Al-Sabhi highlighted the maritime security challenges Yemen faces, including terrorist attacks on vessels by Houthi militias and arms smuggling. These threats jeopardize maritime safety and the marine environment. He noted that the Yemeni government has responded by forming a crisis cell and collaborating with the Arab coalition and friendly nations. Additionally, Yemen remains committed to the Djibouti Code of Conduct and the Jeddah Amendments to enhance maritime security in the region.

Opportunities Amid Challenges

Despite the complex challenges Yemen encounters, Captain Al-Sabhi pointed out that the potential within its corridors and ports represents a genuine opportunity. He stressed the need for a comprehensive collective effort that aligns political will, technical vision, and institutional partnerships. Yemen aims to improve the efficiency of regional and international transport corridors by developing a comprehensive national strategy for transport and logistics services.

Conclusion

Yemen’s participation in the Global Transport Connectivity Forum underscores its commitment to enhancing international transport cooperation and addressing maritime security challenges. The country seeks to leverage its strategic location to foster economic growth and strengthen global logistics networks.
