In its recent statement, the center revealed that over 120 Yemeni citizens, representing approximately 18 families, are enduring relentless bombardment while residing in makeshift tents devoid of basic necessities. These families are struggling to secure food, clean drinking water, and adequate healthcare. The camps have become breeding grounds for diseases, further endangering the health and safety of the residents.
The majority of those trapped comprise Yemeni women married to Palestinian men, along with their children and grandchildren. Their suffering has been exacerbated by expired travel documents, which impede any efforts for evacuation or exit from the region. The dire circumstances have left many feeling hopeless and abandoned.
The center also highlighted that there are missing persons within the community. It has called upon official bodies to take immediate action to ascertain their whereabouts and fulfill their legal and humanitarian responsibilities toward these trapped citizens. The ongoing violence poses a serious violation of the right to life and personal security, particularly threatening the future of children and youth who live in constant fear.
The American Justice Center holds the Yemeni government, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its diplomatic missions, accountable for the protection of its citizens abroad. It regards any inaction or silence as a failure to uphold the state’s obligations to its citizens.
In light of the urgent situation, the center has called for the swift issuance of emergency travel documents and the renewal of expired passports. It urges coordination with international bodies to establish safe corridors for the evacuation of Yemeni families. Furthermore, it recommends enhancing humanitarian response efforts and creating a government crisis cell to monitor the status of the missing and provide necessary support.
