Yemen Reaffirms Commitment to Ocean Protection at UN Oceans Conference

The Republic of Yemen has reaffirmed its strong commitment to protecting oceans and marine resources. This commitment highlights the importance of international cooperation to ensure the sustainability of these vital resources, which are crucial for the future of humanity.

Key Address at the UN Oceans Conference

Ali Al-Sabhi, the Deputy Minister of Transport for Maritime Affairs and Ports, delivered Yemen’s message today at the United Nations Oceans Conference in Nice, France. He emphasized Yemen’s extensive coastline along the Arabian and Red Seas, as well as its direct access to the Indian Ocean. Al-Sabhi stated, "Yemen fully understands the environmental, economic, and social significance of our oceans." He expressed gratitude to the governments of France and Costa Rica, along with the UN Secretariat, for organizing the conference amid increasing global environmental challenges facing oceans.

Challenges Facing Yemen’s Marine Environment

Al-Sabhi addressed several challenges impacting Yemen’s marine environment, including climate change, illegal and overfishing, plastic pollution, and marine waste. He also noted the negative effects of the ongoing war instigated by Houthi militias. He stressed the urgent need for enhanced international cooperation to support developing nations in confronting these threats. Furthermore, he called for technical and financial assistance to help these nations fulfill their commitments and achieve sustainable development.

Support for International Efforts

The Deputy Minister expressed Yemen’s full support for international initiatives aimed at establishing legally binding agreements to combat plastic pollution. He also advocated for sustainable fisheries management, the elimination of illegal fishing, and the promotion of the blue economy as a means to achieve inclusive growth and combat poverty.

Commitment to Biodiversity and Sustainable Use

Al-Sabhi highlighted the signing of the international agreement on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity (BBNJ) by the Minister of Water and Environment. He expressed Yemen’s eagerness to strengthen international cooperation to build a genuine partnership for ocean conservation.

A Call for Global Unity

In conclusion, Al-Sabhi stated that the health of the oceans is closely linked to the future of humanity. He urged the international community to unite in achieving sustainable development goals, ensuring that oceans remain a source of life and abundance for current and future generations.
