Yemen’s Engagement at the World Health Assembly

The Republic of Yemen actively participated in the 79th World Health Assembly, which took place in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 18 to May 23. The delegation, led by Minister of Public Health and Population Dr. Qassem Baheeb, engaged in vital discussions surrounding pressing health issues that affect Yemen and the global community.

Key Health Issues Addressed

This year’s assembly focused on several priority health topics, including:

  • Enhancing universal health coverage
  • Improving primary healthcare services
  • Strengthening emergency health preparedness and response
  • Global health security and epidemic control
  • Management of communicable and non-communicable diseases

Additionally, the meetings delved into the development of health systems, global pandemic readiness, and the support of health innovation through sustainable financing mechanisms. Participants reviewed comprehensive reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding both regional and international health challenges.

Yemen’s Commitment and Future Collaborations

Minister Baheeb highlighted the significance of Yemen’s participation in this international forum, stating that it enhances Yemen’s visibility within global health organizations. He emphasized that such engagement opens broader avenues for collaboration with international partners, crucial for bolstering the health sector amid current challenges.

Dr. Baheeb reiterated Yemen’s commitment to engaging positively with global health issues, expressing the country’s eagerness to learn from international experiences to improve healthcare services, build medical staff capacity, and strengthen primary healthcare programs aimed at combating epidemics.

The Yemeni delegation also included Dr. Ali Al-Walidi, the Undersecretary for Primary Healthcare, and Dr. Ahmed Al-Kamal, the Undersecretary for Planning. Their participation underscores Yemen’s dedication to addressing health challenges and enhancing healthcare delivery.

Overall, Yemen’s engagement at the World Health Assembly marks a significant step in its ongoing efforts to improve health outcomes and foster international cooperation in the health sector.
