The Republic of Yemen, represented by the Customs Authority, participated in the 15th meeting of the Arab National Contact Points. This event focused on the United Nations’ Action Program to combat the illicit trade of small arms and light weapons. The meeting concluded today at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
Over two days, representatives from 15 Arab nations discussed the progress made in implementing a cooperation project between the Arab League and the European Union. This initiative aims to support Arab countries in combating the illegal proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
The meeting highlighted the project’s various phases, which began in 2019. Currently, the third phase is underway and will continue until 2027. So far, seven Arab countries have benefited from capacity-building programs under this project.
Participants also addressed preparations for the Arab participation in the 9th meeting to monitor the implementation of the Action Program. This meeting is scheduled to take place in New York from June 1 to June 5, 2026. The attendees agreed on several proposals and insights to include in the Arab group’s statement and the final document of the meeting.
Additionally, the meeting reviewed the outcomes of the government experts’ meeting on autonomous lethal weapons, which took place in Geneva last March. This discussion underscored the ongoing commitment of Arab nations to address the challenges posed by advanced weaponry.
In summary, Yemen’s involvement in this significant meeting reflects its dedication to international cooperation in combating the illicit arms trade, ensuring regional security, and promoting peace.
