Yemen Participates in International Conference on Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing

The Republic of Yemen actively participated today in an international regional conference focused on combating money laundering, terrorism financing, and the proliferation of weapons. The event took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and was led by Hani Wahab, Yemen’s Deputy Minister of Finance and the head of the Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force (MENAFATF). This conference coincided with the 39th plenary meeting of MENAFATF, which Yemen currently chairs.

Key Participants and Highlights

The conference celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). Notable attendees included Ayman Al-Sayari, Governor of the Saudi Central Bank and head of the Permanent Committee for Combating Money Laundering, and Eliza de Anda Madrazo, the President of FATF. The gathering also featured a distinguished group of officials, experts, and specialists in anti-money laundering and terrorism financing from the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East, North Africa, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Strategic and Technical Sessions

The conference included several strategic and technical sessions addressing crucial aspects of anti-money laundering and terrorism financing. The strategic sessions focused on adopting international standards by the FATF and regional counterparts. Participants discussed lessons learned from the current round of mutual evaluations and looked ahead to future assessments.

On the technical side, sessions covered the application of FATF standards to virtual assets and modern technologies. Additionally, participants shared experiences and best practices in tracking and recovering assets, emphasizing the importance of enhancing international cooperation.

This conference marks a significant step forward in the global fight against financial crimes, highlighting Yemen’s commitment to international standards and collaborative efforts in combating money laundering and terrorism financing.
