The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a sharp increase in cholera cases among displaced individuals fleeing escalating violence in Yemen. The organization warns of the heightened risk of infectious disease outbreaks amid mass displacement and deteriorating essential services.
In a recent statement, WHO highlighted that the intensifying conflict and mass displacement have increased the risk of disease spread. Overcrowding, lack of clean water, and disrupted health services expose a growing number of people to cholera, measles, and other preventable diseases.
The recent escalation, which began on August 6, has displaced more than 200,000 people across ten governorates, coinciding with a significant rise in cholera transmission.
The statement detailed that the total number of suspected cholera cases in Yemen this year has risen to:
It noted that a quarter of these cases occurred in the last four weeks as conflict and displacement continue.
WHO indicated that 92% of total cases have been reported in the following governorates:
These regions host the largest number of newly displaced individuals. The outbreak has also reached remote displacement camps in Hadramaut, which are difficult for health teams to access.
The organization reported that health authorities in Djibouti have confirmed:
Dr. Anett Heinzelmann, the regional emergency director at WHO, stated that displaced families face an additional threat from preventable diseases. She emphasized that the lack of urgent funding, access to clean water, vaccinations, and basic health services could lead to rapid disease outbreaks among vulnerable communities.
The statement added that disease outbreaks place additional pressure on health facilities treating thousands injured due to the conflict. Approximately 500 health facilities in nine affected governorates lack support from partners.
WHO reiterated its urgent need for additional funding to contain disease outbreaks, maintain essential health services, and protect displaced communities in Yemen.
