A viral video featuring Houthi officials and employees in Ibb has sparked widespread anger among the local population. In the footage, these individuals insult the revered companions of the Prophet Muhammad and promote sectarian rhetoric. Residents have condemned this behavior as foreign to Yemeni society and its core values.
The video prominently features Najib Al-Kamil, appointed by the militia as the director of the Health Office in Ibb, alongside others who make derogatory remarks about the companions present at the Saqifah of Banu Sa’ida following the Prophet’s death. This shocking display has left many in the community reeling, as they view it as an unacceptable transgression.
The video’s release coincided with the annual observance of what the militia calls “Day of Wilayah,” a celebration held in areas under their control. Residents of Ibb perceive these events as attempts by the Houthis to impose a foreign sectarian agenda on Yemeni society. Activists and journalists from Ibb have stated that the content of the video reflects a moral and ethical decline that does not represent the community’s values.
Activists emphasize that the people of Ibb hold the companions of the Prophet in high esteem and view their status as untouchable. They assert that any attempts to incite discord will be met with community awareness and rejection. Local intellectuals, scholars, and community leaders have been urged to take a unified stance against this disgraceful act and to condemn it publicly. They argue that such insults are part of the militia’s broader strategy to fragment society and threaten social peace.
Furthermore, they pointed out that since the Houthi coup in 2014, the militia has consistently revived sectarian celebrations that were previously unknown in Yemen. This behavior necessitates a collective effort from all segments of Yemeni society to confront and categorically reject these actions.
