Unrestricted Journalists reveal severe violations against reporters throughout 2024.

The organization “Journalists Without Restrictions” has released its annual report for 2024, highlighting the ongoing severe violations against journalists in Yemen. The report documented 75 incidents targeting journalists and media activists, including a death sentence, arrests, kidnappings, trials, and summonses. These findings reveal a grim reality for press freedoms in the country.

Overview of Violations

The report indicates that these violations do not signal an improvement in press freedoms compared to previous years. Instead, they reflect the stringent restrictions and oppressive control imposed by various factions on journalistic activities.

The breakdown of violations is as follows:

• Arrests and Detentions: 24 cases (32.43%)
• Trials and Summons: 21 cases (28.38%)
• Threats and Incitements: 12 cases (16.21%)
• Torture and Assaults: 4 cases (5.40%)
• Raids on Institutions and Journalists’ Homes: 4 cases (5.40%)
• Attempts on Life: 2 cases (2.70%)
• Deportations and Pursuits: 2 cases (2.70%)
• Other violations include executions, salary suspensions, and prohibitions on practicing journalism.

Ongoing Threats to Journalists

The organization emphasized that the persistence of these systematic violations poses a significant threat to journalists’ lives. Yemen continues to rank among the most dangerous countries for journalists worldwide, holding the 154th position out of 180 countries in the Press Freedom Index published by “Reporters Without Borders.”

“Journalists Without Restrictions” urges all parties to respect journalistic work and protect journalists from any form of aggression or harassment. The organization asserts that press freedoms are fundamental to achieving peace and strengthening democracy in Yemen.
