The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued a warning regarding the worsening conditions for children in the Gaza Strip. Approximately 800,000 children remain displaced, with many living in tents or damaged buildings. Additionally, nearly 60,000 children have lost one or both parents during the ongoing conflict.
UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Perez reported that over 340 children have died, and hundreds more have sustained injuries since the announcement of a ceasefire. Despite a relative improvement in food security, Perez emphasized the need for continued and widespread access to humanitarian aid and commercial goods.
As winter approaches, Perez cautioned about increasing risks due to damaged shelters, inadequate sanitation services, and overcrowded living conditions for displaced families.
UNICEF noted that all six wastewater treatment plants in the Gaza Strip remain out of service. The rainwater collection basin in the Sheikh Radwan area has filled to half its capacity, raising concerns about potential flooding.
The organization warned of the danger of the basin overflowing, which could inundate residential areas with contaminated water. This situation threatens to exacerbate the humanitarian and health crises for the population, particularly for children.
