The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued a stark warning regarding the worsening situation for children in the Gaza Strip. Approximately 800,000 children remain displaced, with many living in tents or damaged buildings. Furthermore, nearly 60,000 children have lost one or both parents during the ongoing conflict.
UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Perez reported that over 340 children have died, and hundreds more have sustained injuries since the announcement of a ceasefire. Despite a slight improvement in food security, Perez emphasized the urgent need for continued humanitarian aid and the broad entry of commercial goods into the region.
As winter approaches, Perez cautioned about increasing risks due to damaged shelters, inadequate sanitation services, and overcrowded living conditions for displaced families. UNICEF highlighted that all six wastewater treatment plants in Gaza remain non-operational. Additionally, a rainwater collection basin in the Sheikh Radwan area has reached half of its capacity.
The organization warned of the imminent danger of flooding in the basin, which could inundate residential areas with contaminated water. This situation threatens to exacerbate the humanitarian and health crises facing the population, particularly among children.
