UN Report Reveals Decline in African Migrants Arriving in Yemen
A recent report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) highlights a significant decrease in the number of African migrants reaching Yemen. In May, 11,587 migrants arrived, marking a 22% drop from April’s total of 14,834 migrants.
Migration Routes and Demographics
The report details the various routes taken by these migrants. Approximately 66% arrived via the coasts of Djibouti, landing in Abyan and Taiz. Meanwhile, 28% came from the coasts of Somalia, all reaching Shabwa. A smaller group, comprising 6%, entered from Oman, arriving in Al-Mahra.
In terms of demographics, the report indicates that 66% of the migrants were men, while 17% were children and 17% were women. This trend continues to reflect the ongoing search for economic opportunities and the need to escape conflict in their home countries.
Total Migrant Arrivals in 2026
Since the beginning of January 2026, Yemen has seen a total of 83,835 migrants arrive. This influx underscores the persistent challenges faced by individuals seeking better lives amid ongoing regional instability.
