Samuel Werberg, a regional spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, has openly criticized the Houthi militias, backed by the Iranian regime, for jeopardizing the United States and Saudi Arabia’s efforts to end the war in Yemen. In a statement to the Middle Eastern newspaper, Werberg expressed concern that the progress made is now at risk due to the actions of the Houthis. He highlighted the absence of direct communication between the United States and the Houthi militias, noting that Washington could relay messages through media outlets or intermediaries such as the Omanis.
Werberg urged the Houthis to halt their offensive operations, concentrate on Yemen’s internal issues, and work towards a permanent ceasefire. He labeled the continuous Houthi attacks on the Red Sea as “unjustifiable” and expressed apprehension over the recent attack on the “Sunion” vessel, which poses a risk of a significant oil spill. Werberg pointed out that a spill of one million barrels would be four times larger than the Exxon Valdez disaster, adversely affecting both Yemenis and Egyptians.
Regarding “Operation Prosperity Guardian,” the American official confirmed that this U.S.-led initiative, with participation from the United Kingdom and other nations, aims to halt and prevent the Houthis from launching larger attacks and causing further damage. He warned that Iran and its proxies are exploiting the political instability in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and Syria.
This development underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region and the ongoing challenges in achieving peace in Yemen. The international community continues to watch closely as efforts to resolve the conflict and address its humanitarian implications press on.
