The UN condemns the Houthi resumption of attacks on civilian vessels in the Red Sea.

UN Condemns Houthi Attacks on Civilian Ships in the Red Sea

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has strongly condemned the recent resurgence of Houthi attacks on civilian vessels traversing the Red Sea. Notably, between July 6 and July 8, 2025, these assaults led to the sinking of the ships Magic Seas and Eternity Sea. Reports indicate that at least four crew members lost their lives, several others sustained injuries, and a minimum of 15 crew members remain missing.

Escalation of Violence

In an official statement, Guterres remarked, “The sinking of these vessels and the loss of crew members represent a serious escalation in this vital waterway.” He urged the Houthi group to refrain from any actions that could hinder ongoing search and rescue operations for the missing crew.

Threat to Maritime Safety

Guterres emphasized that these attacks constitute a blatant violation of maritime safety and security, as well as international navigation rights. He warned that they pose a direct threat to maritime transport and carry significant risks of causing substantial environmental, economic, and humanitarian damage.

Call for Compliance with Security Council Resolution

The Secretary-General reiterated the importance of full compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2768 (2025), which addresses Houthi attacks on commercial ships and cargo vessels in the Red Sea.

Ongoing Commitment to Peace Efforts

The United Nations reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to support de-escalation efforts in the region. The organization continues to engage with Yemeni, regional, and international stakeholders to achieve a peaceful and sustainable resolution to the conflict in Yemen.
