Today, Taiz Governor Nabil Shamsan met with Julian Harness, the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, to discuss solutions for the ongoing water crisis in the province.
Governor Shamsan praised the significant efforts aimed at addressing the water shortage exacerbated by the delayed rainy season. He emphasized that ongoing measures to resume water pumping from Al-Hawban, along with the Talooq project, serve as temporary solutions. The local authority is actively seeking funding to establish a desalination plant, which would provide a long-term resolution to this longstanding issue.
Shamsan highlighted the necessity of pumping water from all Al-Hawban fields, the city, and Al-Dabab into the local water authority’s reservoirs. He stressed the need for a clear distribution mechanism and operational procedures. Furthermore, he called for comprehensive coordination with the United Nations to ensure that water reaches citizens through the local network.
Engineer Wathiq Al-Aghbari, Director of the Local Water and Sanitation Authority, presented a map of the fields and wells that previously supplied water to the city. He outlined ongoing efforts to restore water pumping to the authority’s reservoirs and establish a fair distribution plan.
In response, Julian Harness expressed hope for the resumption of water pumping from Al-Hawban to the residents. He reviewed the ongoing coordination efforts to maintain wells, pumps, and transport lines. Harness also discussed the technical arrangements needed to reach an agreement that would restore water supply and alleviate the city’s water crisis in the coming days.
The collaborative efforts between local authorities and the United Nations aim to tackle the pressing water crisis in Taiz. With a focus on both immediate and long-term solutions, stakeholders are committed to ensuring that residents have access to this vital resource.
