The High Committee for Updating and Developing the National Disability Strategy convened its first meeting today, Tuesday, in the temporary capital of Aden. The meeting, led by Dr. Sadiq Al-Jama’i, the Deputy Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, approved the proposed methodology for the update and development period from 2027 to 2032.
During the meeting, committee members and representatives from governmental bodies, as well as local and international organizations working in the field of disability, reviewed the stages of updating and developing the strategy. This process includes evaluating the previous strategy, analyzing the current situation, identifying gaps and national priorities, conducting extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders, and preparing the strategic framework along with the executive and financial plan. The committee aims to finalize the project and complete the approval procedures within a proposed timeline of eight months.
In his remarks, the Deputy Minister stressed the importance of this meeting as a launchpad for a comprehensive national and institutional effort. This initiative aims to enhance policies and programs directed at individuals with disabilities, promote their rights, and expand their access to services while ensuring their active participation in society. He emphasized the need to translate the state’s commitments into actionable and measurable programs and services.
The Deputy Minister noted that updating the strategy should rely on an objective assessment of the previous strategy from 2014 to 2018. He highlighted the importance of learning from its results and lessons, as well as analyzing current challenges, gaps, and needs. He added that the goal is to prepare a renewed national strategy that responds to actual needs and keeps pace with the changes and challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.
