The Sudanese Army has regained control of Wad Madani from the Rapid Support Forces.

Sudanese Army Claims Control of Wad Madani from Rapid Support Forces

On Saturday, the Sudanese Army announced its successful entry into Wad Madani, a central city in the country, expelling the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). If confirmed, this victory would mark a significant achievement for the army amid nearly two years of ongoing conflict.

Strategic Importance of Wad Madani

The army released a video showing troops reportedly inside Wad Madani, the capital of the Gezira State. This city has served as a commercial and agricultural hub under RSF control since December 2023. Regaining full control of Gezira State could represent a turning point in the war, which erupted in April 2023 due to disputes over integrating the RSF into the national army. The conflict has triggered one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, displacing over 12 million people and leaving half the population facing hunger.

Army’s Progress and Challenges

In a statement, the army congratulated the Sudanese people on their forces’ entry into Wad Madani, stating, “Our troops are now working to cleanse the city of rebel pockets.” Located south of the capital Khartoum, Gezira State has witnessed RSF attacks that have resulted in civilian casualties, destruction of farmland, and looting of hospitals and markets.

Despite its historical significance as an agricultural center, experts warn that Wad Madani faces a famine risk due to the ongoing blockade caused by the conflict.

Intensified Military Campaign

In recent months, the army has intensified its campaign to reclaim Gezira State, following its control over Sennar State in the south. The military has increased airstrikes, which have often impacted civilians. In October, the RSF commander in Gezira announced his defection to the army. While RSF forces participated in operations on Saturday, they responded with a series of counterattacks.

Ongoing Operations in Bahri

On the same day, the army continued its operations in Bahri, a northern area of the capital, where it has made significant advancements in recent months. The RSF still controls most regions in western Sudan and is engaged in a battle for dominance in El Fasher, the last stronghold of the RSF in Darfur.

Conflict in White Nile State

Additionally, the army and the RSF are locked in fierce combat over White Nile State in southern Sudan. As both sides vie for control, the situation remains fluid and complex.

The recent developments underscore the ongoing volatility in Sudan as the army seeks to regain territory and stabilize the nation amidst a humanitarian crisis.
