Today, Sheikh Sultan Al-Barakani, the Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, met with Yuninichi Nakashima, Japan’s Ambassador to Yemen. The two discussed collaborative efforts to enhance and develop bilateral relations between their nations. They also explored avenues for developmental cooperation and humanitarian support amid the current challenges.
During the meeting, Al-Barakani congratulated Nakashima on his appointment as ambassador to Yemen. He expressed his best wishes for Nakashima’s success in his new role. Al-Barakani highlighted the strong historical ties between Yemen and Japan, emphasizing that the agreements and areas of cooperation established over the past decades provide a solid foundation for future partnerships that will benefit both nations.
Al-Barakani reviewed the ongoing events in Yemen, outlining the significant economic, humanitarian, and service-related challenges facing the country. He attributed these difficulties to the actions of the Iran-backed Houthi militia, which has perpetrated acts of terrorism against the Yemeni people. He reiterated that the constitutional legitimacy has consistently sought peace through previous negotiations with the Houthis. However, the Houthis’ persistent refusal to honor agreements has hindered progress toward achieving security and stability.
The Speaker praised Japan’s exceptional role and humanitarian stance, particularly during Yemen’s most challenging times. He called for strengthening the partnership between Yemen and Japan to address humanitarian crises and achieve sustainable development across various sectors. Al-Barakani underscored the importance of balancing humanitarian support with human development, acknowledging Japan’s steadfast support for Yemen through its projects and services, as well as its firm position against the Houthi coup.
Members of Parliament, including Sultan Al-Attawani, Abdulrahman Ma’azib, and Ali Al-Ansi, discussed the current national situation following the Houthi coup. They highlighted the repercussions on the Yemeni people, the national system, and state institutions. They urged their Japanese counterparts to intensify efforts in providing humanitarian and developmental assistance to Yemen’s economy. They also emphasized the importance of learning from Japan’s successful experiences in health, education, technical training, and renewable energy.
In response, Ambassador Nakashima reaffirmed Japan’s support for the legitimate government and the Yemeni people during these difficult times. He indicated that Japan would continue to enhance its humanitarian assistance to meet the needs of the Yemeni population. Nakashima stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between Japan and Yemen to intensify developmental efforts, commending the government’s commitment to achieving peace and stability.
