U.S. Ambassador Discusses Yemen’s Current Situation with Parliament Speaker

On Thursday, Sheikh Sultan al-Barakani, the Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, held a virtual meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, Stephen Fagin. They discussed the latest developments in Yemen and the broader regional landscape.

Strengthening Collaborative Efforts Against Houthi Influence

During the meeting, al-Barakani welcomed Ambassador Fagin and expressed hope for continued joint efforts to eliminate Iranian-backed Houthi dominance in Yemen and the region. He emphasized the need to address the Houthi escalation, which threatens both regional and international security.

Addressing Yemen’s Ongoing Challenges

Al-Barakani outlined several pressing issues facing Yemen and its citizens. He highlighted the ongoing defiance of the Houthi militia and their continuous terrorist activities. These actions have led to deteriorating living conditions, significant damage to infrastructure, and the loss of national facilities in areas under Houthi control.

New Prime Minister Appointment as a Turning Point

The Speaker noted that appointing a new Prime Minister could present an opportunity to tackle the political and economic challenges confronting the government. He stressed the importance of providing necessary support to ensure the government’s success and urged for intensified efforts to activate institutional work and enhance legislative and oversight authorities.

Advocating for Palestinian Justice

Al-Barakani also addressed the Palestinian issue, stating that the current phase requires regional and international efforts to achieve justice for the Palestinian people. He called for enabling Palestinians to establish their state with Jerusalem as its capital and urged an end to the brutal Israeli violence against them.

U.S. Commitment to Yemen’s Stability

In response, Ambassador Fagin reaffirmed the U.S. administration’s commitment to the security, stability, and unity of the Yemeni people and their constitutional legitimacy. He reiterated the U.S. goal of achieving peace and stability in the region, emphasizing ongoing American support for Yemen across various sectors. Fagin expressed optimism about restoring state institutions and achieving a fair and comprehensive peace, ensuring security in international waterways.

Cultural Restoration Initiatives

Ambassador Fagin announced that the U.S. administration plans to restore the Cairo Castle in Taiz Governorate. This project will mark the first restoration of cultural and historical sites since the conflict began in Yemen.
