Members of the United Nations Security Council have reiterated their strong commitment to Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. They expressed full support for the efforts of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, in seeking a comprehensive political settlement.
In a recent statement, Security Council members demanded that the Houthi militia immediately and unconditionally release all United Nations staff and personnel from local and international organizations, as well as diplomatic missions currently held by the group. This call underscores the urgent need for humanitarian access and the protection of those working to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.
The Security Council emphasized that threats against humanitarian organizations are unacceptable. Such actions exacerbate the catastrophic crisis and increase the suffering of the Yemeni population. The Council condemned the ongoing detentions and highlighted the tragic death of a World Food Programme employee in February while in custody.
The Council stressed the importance of the Houthi militia respecting international humanitarian law. They called for safe, rapid, and unhindered access to aid for civilians in need. This commitment is crucial for addressing the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen.
In their statement, Security Council members expressed deep concern regarding the fate of detainees held by the militia, especially with the approach of Eid al-Adha. This holiday heightens the suffering of detainees and their families, who fear a similar fate for their loved ones.
The Security Council’s statements reflect a unified stance on the urgent need for peace and humanitarian access in Yemen, as the country continues to face unprecedented challenges.
