The relief ship heading to Gaza will continue its mission “until the last moment.”

Activists on Freedom Flotilla Ship Vow to Continue Mission Despite Israeli Orders

Activists aboard the Freedom Flotilla’s relief ship, the "Madeleine," have pledged to persist in their mission to deliver aid to Gaza, even as Israel’s military has ordered them to turn back. The ship departed from Sicily last Sunday, aiming to break the long-standing Israeli blockade on the region, which has intensified since the recent conflict with Hamas began on October 7, 2023.

Commitment to the Cause

Rima Hassan, a French-Palestinian member of the European Parliament, spoke to Agence France-Presse from the ship. She stated, "We will remain vigilant until the last moment, until Israel cuts off the internet and communication networks." The ship carries 12 civilians, all unarmed and solely focused on delivering humanitarian aid.

Israeli Defense Minister’s Stance

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant confirmed earlier on Sunday that he had instructed the military to prevent the ship from reaching Gaza. He labeled activist Greta Thunberg as "anti-Semitic" and described the group as "propaganda tools for Hamas." Gallant warned, "Return to where you came from; you will not reach Gaza."

Current Location of the Ship

Organizers of the mission announced on Saturday that the "Madeleine" had reached waters off the coast of Egypt. In response to Gallant’s remarks, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition issued a statement anticipating "interception and aggression from Israel at any moment." They urged the governments of the activists’ home countries to take action to ensure their safety.

Diverse Crew of Activists

The crew includes individuals from Germany, France, Brazil, Turkey, Sweden, Spain, and the Netherlands. German activist Yasmin Akar expressed confidence, stating, "We do not fear them," referring to the Israeli authorities. She added, "The message they send us—that we cannot advance further toward Gaza—does not deter us."

Concerns Over Lack of Official Response

Hassan voiced her concern over the absence of any official reaction from the activists’ home countries. She remarked, "No response has come from any nation. The message is that Israel acts without punishment, without any guarantee of our protection."

French Government’s Position

French Minister for Foreign Trade and French Nationals Abroad, Laurent Saint-Martin, stated on Saturday that Paris is obligated to ensure "consular protection" for its citizens aboard the relief ship. He emphasized that the six French citizens on the ship have the right to consular support.

Context of the Blockade

Israel has enforced a maritime blockade on Gaza since before Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023, which ignited the current conflict. The Freedom Flotilla, established in 2010, represents a non-violent international movement aimed at solidarity with Palestinians and opposes the Israeli blockade on Gaza.

Conclusion

As tensions rise, the activists aboard the "Madeleine" remain resolute in their mission. They continue to call for international support and protection as they navigate the complex geopolitical landscape surrounding Gaza.
