On Sunday, Prime Minister Salem Saleh bin Brek visited several electricity generation stations in Aden, the temporary capital of Yemen. His aim was to assess their current conditions and identify urgent measures needed to enhance their output in response to the rising summer temperatures and alleviate citizens’ hardships.

Inspection of Khormaksar Power Station

During his visit, the Prime Minister inspected ongoing work on the energy diversion project at the Khormaksar Power Station. This project involves the construction of transmission lines and substations to deliver electricity to the districts of Khormaksar, Sirah, Al-Ma’ala, and Tawahi. He listened to explanations from officials and representatives of the executing company regarding the completed work, the remaining timeline for project completion, and its significance in improving the electricity transmission and distribution network in Aden. This initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance electricity services and reduce citizens’ suffering through the establishment of new transmission lines and substations.

Urgent Completion of Energy Diversion Project

The Prime Minister urged the swift completion of the remaining tasks within a month and the activation of the project’s components. He emphasized the strategic importance of this project in energy diversion and strengthening generation capacities, aligning with the government’s commitment to improving electricity services.

Visit to Al-Mansoura Power Station

The Prime Minister also visited the Al-Mansoura Power Station, where he evaluated its generation capacity and identified reasons for its reduced output due to fuel shortages and necessary maintenance. He discussed urgent proposals to restore its full production capacity and ensure the availability of diesel fuel. He directed the completion of generator maintenance and the addition of 20 megawatts of diesel-powered generation capacity, given its lower economic cost.

Meeting with Electricity Officials

Following his visit, the Prime Minister chaired a meeting with electricity officials and station managers to discuss immediate proposals for increasing the production capacity of the Al-Mansoura Power Station. They explored available alternatives to reduce electricity outages and secure fuel supplies to extend operational hours. The meeting also addressed coordinated government actions with the Presidential Leadership Council.

Addressing Current Electricity Challenges

The Prime Minister received a report from Abdul Hakim Fadel, Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy, and other officials regarding existing challenges in electricity operations. They discussed proposed solutions and the collective responsibility to alleviate citizens’ suffering this summer.

Prime Minister bin Brek called for a transparent tender process to appoint a supervisory company to inspect electricity fuel and oversee distribution efficiency. He stressed the need for a comprehensive report detailing electricity revenues and expenditures over the past two years and the first six months of the current year, urging its prompt completion.

The Prime Minister emphasized the necessity of reevaluating the current administrative model of the electricity sector. In a related visit, Prime Minister bin Brek toured the Al-Hasswa Thermal Power Station, built in the 1980s. He reviewed the station’s components and the necessary requirements for its operation, including completing turbine maintenance and securing fuel to maximize its production capacity.

Addressing Maintenance and Operational Issues

The Prime Minister listened to explanations from the station’s director, Engineer Nofal Majmal, and other engineers about turbine maintenance, reasons for operational halts, existing contracts with maintenance companies, and proposed solutions. They noted the potential to generate 40 megawatts from the station using diesel fuel, emphasizing that completing turbine and boiler maintenance would significantly enhance electricity generation capacity.

Directives for Improvement

The Prime Minister issued several directives to the leadership of the Ministry of Electricity, the General Electricity Corporation, and station officials to address existing issues at all administrative and technical levels. He stressed the need to prioritize urgent needs in the electricity sector. He underscored that citizens’ suffering necessitates a professional and ethical response from all officials during this exceptional circumstance.
