Yemeni Government Delegation Prepares for Spring Meetings with World Bank and IMF

The Prime Minister of Yemen, Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, has directed the government delegation participating in the Spring Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to focus on urgent priorities. These meetings commence today in Washington, D.C. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of presenting the economic recovery plan and the ongoing reform program to secure necessary funding.

Emphasizing Prior Discussions with the IMF

During a virtual meeting with the government delegation, Prime Minister bin Mubarak stressed the need to build on discussions he held with the IMF during his visit in January. He called for the development of a specialized program aimed at expanding the IMF’s activities and interventions in Yemen. This initiative seeks to facilitate access to developmental funding and loans. Additionally, he highlighted the significance of showcasing the government’s progress in implementing reforms, enhancing transparency, accountability, and combating corruption, while also seeking international support in these areas.

Key Contributions from Central Bank and Ministers

The Governor of the Central Bank of Yemen, Ahmed Ghaleb, along with key ministers—including Dr. Waed Badhieb (Minister of Planning and International Cooperation), Salem bin Breik (Minister of Finance), Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi (Minister of Water and Environment), and Mani’ bin Yamin (Minister of Electricity and Energy)—provided updates on the preparatory meetings for this important annual event. They outlined the visions and programs that will be presented, as well as the expected outcomes. The officials confirmed that a clear and unified plan will be showcased during the Spring Meetings to secure the necessary support.

Discussion on Economic and Financial Issues

The meeting also addressed the documents and plans that will be presented at the upcoming sessions. The government’s perspective on various economic and financial issues was a focal point, alongside coordination with the international community regarding the classification of the Houthi group as a foreign terrorist organization. This strategic approach aims to enhance Yemen’s position in discussions with global financial institutions and secure vital assistance for the country’s recovery efforts.

In summary, the Yemeni government is actively preparing for the Spring Meetings, aiming to attract essential funding and support for its economic recovery and reform initiatives.
