The Prime Minister emphasizes the UN Population Fund’s role in supporting government efforts to enhance the health sector.

Prime Minister Highlights UNFPA's Role in Supporting Health Initiatives

In a recent meeting held in the temporary capital of Aden, Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak emphasized the crucial role of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in supporting the Yemeni government’s efforts in maternal and child health, reproductive health, and other related sectors.

Strengthening Coordination for Health Priorities

During the meeting with UNFPA representative in Yemen, Anshrah Mohammed, the Prime Minister acknowledged the fund’s projects over the past period. He stressed the importance of enhancing coordination with the government to identify priority interventions, particularly in the health sector. Dr. bin Mubarak also highlighted the need to bolster the capabilities of the Central Statistical Organization. This enhancement aims to provide essential data and statistics necessary for determining intervention priorities, especially in light of the demographic changes caused by the Houthi militia’s war, which has led to significant displacement to liberated areas. He pointed out that these changes have not been adequately considered in the distribution of aid and funding by international agencies and organizations.

Discussing Humanitarian Efforts and Future Plans

The meeting also addressed the collaborative relationship between the government and UNFPA, focusing on the humanitarian tasks being carried out during this period and the fund’s future activities. Key topics included improving coordination with the Central Statistical Organization, the support provided to hospitals and health centers, and emergency responses aimed at protecting Yemeni women and engaging youth. Additionally, the discussion touched on the classification of the Houthi group as a foreign terrorist organization and the relocation of UN offices to Aden.

Future Initiatives and Support for Youth and Women

The Prime Minister received updates from the UN representative regarding the fund’s current interventions, projects, and future plans. He noted the ongoing coordination with the government through the Ministries of Youth and Sports and Social Affairs and Labor to enhance support for youth and women, alongside strengthening the health sector and reproductive health services.

Attendees of the Meeting

The meeting included the presence of the Prime Minister’s advisor, Ambassador Mujib Othman, and the head of the Central Statistical Organization, Dr. Safaa Ma’ti.

This collaboration between the Yemeni government and UNFPA aims to address pressing health issues and improve the overall well-being of the population, particularly vulnerable groups such as women and children.
