Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak recently engaged in a phone conversation with Nigel Clarke, the Deputy Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This discussion aimed to review the ongoing cooperation between Yemen and the IMF, building on the outcomes of talks held in Washington last January.
During the call, both leaders explored effective collaboration mechanisms to support the Yemeni government’s vision and priorities. They specifically focused on the Economic Recovery and Stability Plan for 2025-2026, which the government presented to the IMF. The conversation also addressed how the IMF can mobilize support from international partners and facilitate access to development financing and loans.
The two parties agreed to strengthen their joint cooperation frameworks. They emphasized the importance of addressing the requests submitted by the Yemeni government in line with its priorities. Additionally, they discussed opening new avenues for partnership and focusing on garnering support for the economic recovery plan, as well as backing the government’s ongoing reforms.
Prime Minister bin Mubarak urged the IMF to develop a dedicated program for Yemen, similar to those offered to countries affected by conflict. This initiative aims to achieve economic stability, rebuild institutions, and enhance long-term resilience.
The Prime Minister stressed the need to expedite consultations regarding Article IV, which evaluates Yemen’s economy and identifies priority implementable policies. He also highlighted the importance of exploring emergency financing options and necessary facilitative measures to bridge financial gaps and stimulate donor support.
In response, Nigel Clarke reaffirmed the IMF’s commitment to working closely with the Yemeni government. He acknowledged the government’s reform efforts in financial and monetary sectors and its plans to achieve economic stability. Clarke emphasized the IMF’s dedication to collaborating on the economic recovery plan and taking the government’s observations and priorities into account.
This ongoing dialogue between Yemen and the IMF reflects a shared commitment to fostering economic recovery and stability in the region.
