U.S. and Yemen Strengthen Bilateral Relations

On Thursday, Prime Minister Salem Saleh bin Brek met with U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Stephen Fagin to discuss the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two nations. The meeting focused on shared perspectives regarding local, regional, and international issues of mutual interest.

Enhancing Partnership and Support

During the discussion, both leaders emphasized the importance of enhancing the close partnership between the United States and Yemen. They explored strategies to coordinate support for the Yemeni government, aiming to improve the national currency’s stability and essential services. The conversation also addressed urgent government priorities, including the implementation of an economic recovery plan and ongoing reforms to alleviate humanitarian suffering.

Acknowledging U.S. Support

Prime Minister bin Brek praised the unwavering support from the United States for the Yemeni government and its people. He highlighted the mutual commitment to strengthening partnerships in priority areas. The Prime Minister also stressed the need for coordinated efforts to classify the Houthi militia as a foreign terrorist organization, which would help cut off its funding sources and curb its destabilizing activities. He reiterated the government’s focus on economic, service, and humanitarian reforms, calling for continued support from the U.S., the international community, and Yemen’s partners.

Saudi and UAE Contributions

The Prime Minister acknowledged the significant role played by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in supporting Yemen’s economy during challenging times. He noted ongoing coordination to renew support, which is crucial for overcoming current exceptional circumstances and difficulties.

U.S. Commitment to Yemen

In response, Ambassador Fagin reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting the Yemeni government and its efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people. He expressed confidence in the Prime Minister’s ability to navigate current challenges and pledged continued international support for these efforts.

The meeting also included the presence of Prime Minister’s advisor, Ambassador Mujib Othman, who contributed to the discussions on enhancing bilateral cooperation.

This dialogue marks a significant step in reinforcing the partnership between the U.S. and Yemen, focusing on shared goals and mutual support in addressing pressing challenges.
