German Support for Yemen’s Government Emphasized in Recent Meeting

Prime Minister Highlights Germany’s Role

Prime Minister Salem Saleh bin Brek underscored the significant role that Germany can play in supporting Yemen’s government and addressing urgent priorities. He emphasized the importance of Germany’s assistance in alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people and achieving their aspirations for restoring state institutions and ending the Houthi rebellion.

Meeting with German Officials

This statement came during a meeting on Thursday with Tobias Tunkel, the Director General for the Middle East and North Africa at the German Foreign Office, and Janina Kopfmueller, the Chargé d’Affaires at the German Embassy in Yemen. The German officials conveyed their congratulations on bin Brek’s appointment as Prime Minister and expressed their wishes for his success in overcoming the current challenges.

Strengthening Yemen-Germany Relations

The discussion focused on enhancing Yemeni-German relations across various sectors. Both parties expressed a mutual commitment to strengthening and developing bilateral cooperation. They also addressed recent developments in national, regional, and international contexts, reaffirming Germany’s support for Yemen’s constitutional legitimacy.

Urgent Priorities for Yemen’s Government

Prime Minister bin Brek outlined the government’s immediate priorities in economic, service, and living conditions. He stressed the need for coordinated efforts to gather support for the government to fulfill its obligations, such as paying salaries, providing electricity, stabilizing the national currency, and improving living standards. He also highlighted the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of Houthi terrorist attacks, which are backed by the Iranian regime, on oil facilities and international shipping routes.

Germany’s Continued Support

In response, Tunkel reiterated Germany’s commitment to supporting the legitimate Yemeni government in navigating the current crisis. He emphasized Germany’s firm stance against Houthi threats to international shipping and the need to increase pressure on their Iranian backers. Tunkel also reaffirmed Germany’s dedication to achieving peace in Yemen.
