In a significant move towards enhancing infrastructure, Prime Minister Salem Saleh bin Brek has instructed the Road and Bridge Maintenance Fund to address previous shortcomings and transition to a new phase of institutional work. This phase will emphasize professionalism, transparency, and efficiency, ensuring tangible results on the ground.
During a meeting on Tuesday, attended by Minister of Public Works and Roads Salem Al-Aboudi and the new Chairman of the Road and Bridge Maintenance Fund, Engineer Hussein Al-Aqrobi, the Prime Minister reviewed the proposed work plan for the upcoming phase. The plan focuses on institutional practices and transparency, ensuring the fund fulfills its foundational objectives.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need for the fund’s leadership to swiftly prepare a comprehensive report detailing all past and current projects. This report should include achievement levels, execution rates, encountered obstacles, and performance shortcomings. Additionally, it must assess costs and quality levels to facilitate appropriate corrective actions and enhance oversight and accountability.
The Prime Minister called for a comprehensive reform plan based on accurate and realistic evaluations. This plan should identify urgent intervention priorities, activate partnerships with donors and supportive entities, and implement technical and administrative oversight mechanisms. These steps aim to ensure quality execution while minimizing deficiencies and corruption.
The Prime Minister also urged the Board of Directors of the Road Maintenance Fund to enhance its supervisory role. This includes monitoring performance and ensuring efficiency in road maintenance projects according to required technical standards. He stressed the importance of coordinating with local authorities to prioritize road maintenance interventions and conduct financial and technical oversight of maintenance activities.
The meeting discussed proposals and priorities for initiating a new operational phase for the Road Maintenance Fund. It aims to urgently address previous deficiencies, focusing on maintaining the road network through regular, routine, and emergency maintenance, as well as overseeing the management of weight and dimension stations for both stationary and mobile transport vehicles on all roads.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the road sector as a vital artery for development and services. Given the current challenges, he highlighted the need to rebuild infrastructure, enhance connectivity between provinces, and improve safe mobility for citizens, goods, and services. He called for a work plan to maintain and improve the road network in the temporary capital of Aden and liberated provinces, aiming to enhance safety and reduce traffic accidents.
In response, the Chairman of the Road and Bridge Maintenance Fund expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by the leadership and government. He committed to implementing the directives transparently and fostering teamwork to rebuild and enhance the fund’s performance. He outlined key short- and medium-term priorities, emphasizing the importance of reviewing performance and addressing past negatives, including rationalizing expenditures to benefit infrastructure projects and serve citizens across various provinces.
The meeting also included Dr. Ali Atboush, Director of the Prime Minister’s Office, and Engineer Ali Al-Tabb, Executive Director of the General Authority for Roads and Bridges.
This initiative marks a crucial step towards revitalizing the road maintenance sector, ultimately benefiting the public and enhancing infrastructure across the region.
