Prime Minister Addresses Funding Challenges in Yemen

On Sunday, Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, the Prime Minister of Yemen, convened a government meeting in the temporary capital of Aden. The meeting focused on the pressing issue of declining international funding across various sectors and outlined necessary steps to address this challenge in collaboration with Yemen’s international partners, including donor countries and organizations.

Discussion on Houthi Classification as a Terrorist Group

The meeting also addressed the implications of classifying the Houthi movement as a terrorist organization. Officials discussed the required measures across all sectors to mitigate any negative impacts on Yemeni citizens. They emphasized the importance of ensuring that humanitarian aid flows smoothly throughout the country, without any obstacles arising from this classification.

Financial Situation and Coordination Efforts

Participants provided updates on the financial status of several sectors reliant on external support. They shared forecasts regarding the anticipated decline in funding and detailed ongoing coordination with international partners and the United Nations country team in Yemen. The discussions aimed to realign priorities and develop strategies to bridge the funding gap effectively.

Call for Coordinated Action

Prime Minister bin Mubarak urged all government entities and partners, including UN organizations, to work more effectively and in a coordinated manner. He stressed the need to reassess priorities and respond to the actual needs on the ground. The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of a collaborative approach to overcome the current national, regional, and international challenges.

Attendees of the Meeting

The meeting included key figures such as the Minister of Water and Environment, Tawfiq al-Sharjabi; the Minister of Industry and Trade, Mohammed al-Ashwal; and the Minister of Public Health and Population, Dr. Qassem Bahibeh. Other attendees included the Minister of Local Administration, Hussein al-Aghbari; the Minister of Education, Tarek al-Akbari; and the Governor of Aden, Hamed Lamlas. Additionally, deputy ministers from various departments, including Planning and International Cooperation, Foreign Affairs, Finance, and Public Works, participated in the discussions, along with the Prime Minister’s advisor, Ambassador Mujib Othman, and the Executive Director of the Prime Minister’s Technical Team, Jamal bin Ghanem.

This meeting marks a critical step in addressing Yemen’s funding challenges and ensuring that humanitarian efforts continue to reach those in need amidst ongoing crises.
