Prime Minister Leads Anti-Smuggling Committee Meeting in Aden

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Salem Saleh bin Breik chaired a meeting of the High Committee for Combating Smuggling in the temporary capital of Aden. The committee discussed recent developments in efforts to combat smuggling, government measures to enhance security and customs oversight, and the activation of legal deterrents. These initiatives aim to mitigate the severe impacts of smuggling on national security, the economy, and public health.

Prioritizing Anti-Smuggling Efforts

The committee emphasized the need for the government to prioritize anti-smuggling initiatives. It focused on tracking currency and money traffickers, as well as criminal networks involved in smuggling goods, including fuel and domestic gas. These activities pose significant threats to economic and social security, affecting citizens’ lives and safety. The committee also highlighted the importance of media and community support in bolstering government efforts to combat smuggling and reduce its catastrophic risks.

Review of Security Reports

During the meeting, the committee reviewed reports from the Ministers of Defense and Interior regarding efforts to curb smuggling, particularly concerning drugs and weapons intended for the Houthi militia. The discussion included preventive measures and improved coordination among various sectors.

Commitment to Combat Smuggling

Prime Minister bin Breik reaffirmed the committee’s central role in combating smuggling and stressed the importance of regular meetings to monitor anti-smuggling efforts. He noted that combating smuggling remains a top priority due to its direct impact on the nation’s economy and national security.

Enhancing Coordination Among Agencies

The Prime Minister directed an increase in coordination and integration among relevant agencies. He underscored the need for intensified efforts and accountability to limit smuggling’s detrimental effects on society. He assured that the government would take firm action against smuggling networks and pursue legal action against those involved.

Evaluation of Previous Meetings

The committee evaluated the implementation of decisions from previous meetings, including the rotation of personnel at land and sea ports among various government agencies, military, and security forces. They also coordinated with local authorities to strengthen anti-smuggling efforts.

Assessment of Port Performance

The committee reviewed an assessment report on the performance of several land, sea, and air ports, identifying discrepancies and proposing solutions. They praised the measures taken at the Aden Free Zone Container Port following the appointment of a new manager, which aims to encourage trade through the port.

Addressing Identified Issues

The committee instructed the correction of identified discrepancies and the implementation of recommendations from the report regarding the performance of Aden International Airport, Al-Wadiah Border Crossing, and Shahn and Sarfait crossings in Al-Mahra Governorate. They requested updates on actions taken to address these issues.

Customs Authority Report

The committee also examined a report from the Customs Authority detailing achievements in combating smuggling during 2024 and the first quarter of the current year. The report highlighted over 246 seizures at customs ports, underscoring the critical role of customs in safeguarding the community and national security. The authority has activated its customs control sector and trained personnel in anti-smuggling efforts to enhance their efficiency and performance, while also improving coordination with security and military agencies for legal referrals.
