Government Meeting Focuses on Tax and Customs Reforms in Yemen

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak chaired a government meeting in the temporary capital of Aden. The meeting aimed to discuss strategies for enhancing the efficiency of tax and customs institutions. The government seeks to improve the collection of public resources, implement necessary reforms, and address existing discrepancies while fostering coordination with the national private sector.

Proposals for Tax Efficiency

During the meeting, Finance Minister Salem bin Brek and Minister of Industry and Trade Mohammed Al-Ashwal participated in discussions about various proposals. These proposals aim to enhance tax efficiency and rectify discrepancies at the central, governorate, and district levels. The government intends to boost public revenues and streamline collection processes. Additionally, the meeting emphasized the need to unify customs procedures across all entry points.

Addressing the Houthi Classification

The meeting also reviewed the government’s plans regarding the recent classification of the Houthi group as a foreign terrorist organization. Officials expressed concern about ensuring that this designation does not disrupt commercial activities or the national private sector. The government aims to facilitate the smooth flow of goods, food supplies, and humanitarian aid. Furthermore, they plan to coordinate with the international community to align the requirements of this decision with its primary objectives, minimizing any negative impacts on Yemen’s financial and banking sectors and protecting citizens’ interests.

Commitment to Tax and Customs Reforms

Prime Minister bin Mubarak directed the completion of reforms in tax and customs sectors. He emphasized the importance of collecting fees, particularly from major taxpayers, and ensuring that these funds reach the state treasury. He urged relevant ministries and government entities to implement necessary policies and alternatives. Moreover, he highlighted the need for enhanced coordination with the national private sector to mitigate potential humanitarian repercussions on vulnerable social groups in areas controlled by Houthi militias.

Assurance of Economic Stability

The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment, under the guidance of President Rashad Al-Alimi and the members of the Presidential Leadership Council, to ensure that the classification of the Houthi group as a terrorist organization does not adversely affect commercial activities or the national private sector. The government aims to maintain the steady flow of goods and food supplies, safeguarding the livelihoods of citizens in Houthi-controlled regions.

Attendees of the Meeting

The meeting included key figures such as Dr. Abdulhakim Al-Qabati, Head of the Customs Authority, Dr. Jamal Sorour, Head of the Tax Authority, and Jamal bin Ghanem, Executive Director of the Prime Minister’s Technical Team. Their participation underscores the government’s commitment to addressing these critical issues effectively.
