National Commission Holds Hearings on Torture Victims

The National Commission for Investigating Allegations of Human Rights Violations conducted individual and group hearings today. These sessions focused on victims of torture and mistreatment in detention facilities and prisons operated by the Iran-backed Houthi militia.

Victims Share Their Stories

During the hearings, led by Commission members Judge Nasser Al-Awdhali and Judge Ishraq Al-Maqtari, victims recounted their harrowing experiences. They detailed the physical and psychological torture they endured, which included the use of various punitive tools such as electric wires, wooden sticks, electrocution, suspension, and strangulation. Additionally, they described threats, intimidation, and solitary confinement in conditions that violated both national and international standards.

Patterns of Abuse and Calls for Justice

Victims highlighted patterns of torture experienced during prolonged detentions across different prisons. In some cases, this brutal treatment led to death due to severe torture and denial of medical care. Most participants demanded their right to justice, reparations, and restoration, as guaranteed by national laws and international human rights treaties.

Ongoing Investigations and Urgent Action Needed

The National Commission reaffirmed its commitment to investigating these serious violations, which have escalated during the armed conflict in Yemen. The Commission emphasized the urgent need to halt the use of torture and all forms of cruel or degrading treatment against detainees, the forcibly disappeared, and other victims of the conflict.

Call for Accountability and Support for Victims

The Commission urged the judiciary to fulfill its role in holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring they do not escape punishment. It also stressed the importance of supporting recovery programs, including psychological, social, health, and economic rehabilitation for victims and their families. This support should come from government entities, international organizations, and the global community.
