National Commission Investigates Human Rights Violations in Taiz
The National Commission for Investigating Allegations of Human Rights Violations conducted a field visit today to the areas of Al-Hushma, Al-Shajara, Al-Shaiba, and Al-Muftash in the Al-Taziah district of Taiz Governorate. This visit aimed to assess the conditions of residents facing ongoing human rights abuses by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia.
Assessment of Damage
Led by Commission member Judge Ishraq Al-Maqtari, the team examined the physical damage inflicted on several homes and civilian facilities due to indiscriminate shelling. This bombardment clearly violates international humanitarian law, as it lacks proportionality and targets civilian areas.
Impact on Healthcare and Education
The team documented the destruction of health facilities that had previously provided essential services. This devastation has deprived hundreds of families, particularly women and children, of necessary medical care. Additionally, the team noted the complete shutdown of Abu Ubaida School, which had offered education in two shifts for both boys and girls.
Eyewitness Accounts of Displacement
The team listened to testimonies from victims of forced displacement, affecting approximately 300 families in the region. They also gathered accounts from children and women who suffered injuries from sniper fire and landmines, resulting in permanent disabilities and amputations. The ongoing shelling has also inflicted severe psychological trauma on the affected populations.
Documentation and Evidence Collection
The team meticulously recorded details of these incidents and collected evidence to further investigate the serious violations against civilians. These actions contradict binding rules in international humanitarian law and human rights law.
Community Needs and Appeals
The Commission noted the community’s urgent calls for humanitarian relief. Residents emphasized the need for health and relief assistance, particularly for the most impoverished farmers who have lost access to their lands due to sniper fire and landmines. Additionally, displaced individuals are living without shelter or basic necessities for a dignified life.
This investigation underscores the critical need for accountability and support for those affected by the ongoing conflict in Taiz.
