On Sunday, the National Committee for Investigating Allegations of Human Rights Violations met with Taiz Governor Nabil Shamsan to address pressing human rights issues and enhance protection mechanisms in the city.
The committee discussed various topics related to the humanitarian situation, particularly focusing on social and economic rights. Key issues included access to essential services such as water and electricity, equitable access to justice, and measures to mitigate the impact of violence on civilians in conflict zones. The committee emphasized the importance of providing adequate medical care for affected individuals and integrating civilian victims into development and humanitarian aid programs, especially in remote areas recently visited by the committee.
Committee member Judge Ishraq Al-Maqtari presented significant findings from the committee’s visit to the Central Prison. The committee reviewed the conditions of hundreds of inmates and highlighted the urgent need for swift actions to protect prisoners’ rights and dignity. Additionally, the committee discussed the outcomes of workshops and meetings held with victims’ associations and civil society groups. They stressed the necessity for local authorities to continue addressing the rights of vulnerable groups, including mine victims and children.
Governor Shamsan welcomed the observations and recommendations from the National Committee, recognizing the shared responsibility for human rights protection. He acknowledged the committee’s crucial role in monitoring and visiting field sites and prisons, which enhances the performance of institutions responsible for upholding human rights.
Shamsan reaffirmed the local authority’s commitment to incorporating the committee’s findings into the province’s action plan. He emphasized that this effort aligns with the state’s obligations to uphold human rights and support the rule of law. The governor’s proactive approach aims to ensure that human rights considerations are integrated into institutional frameworks effectively.
