The Yemeni Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has welcomed the statement from the European Union’s High Representative, which represents the collective stance of EU member states regarding Yemen. The statement strongly condemned the Houthi escalation, attacks on civilians, and assaults on civilian infrastructure, as well as the assaults targeting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The ministry praised the EU’s supportive position towards Yemen and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It emphasized the EU’s commitment to Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. Additionally, the EU reaffirmed its dedication to supporting the legitimate government and the Presidential Leadership Council.
The ministry also commended the EU’s call to cease military support for the Houthi militia, including Iranian assistance. The EU reiterated its prohibition against using starvation as a method of warfare. Furthermore, it demanded the immediate opening of a humanitarian corridor to Taiz and the unconditional release of UN personnel and humanitarian workers kidnapped by the militia.
The ministry renewed its condemnation of the crime that led to the death of Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Shami, a staff member of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Al-Shami died in Houthi prisons after being forcibly disappeared since June 2024. The ministry held the militia fully responsible for this crime and called for an independent international investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding it and to hold those responsible accountable. It also urged for decisive international actions to ensure the release of other abductees.
The ministry called on the international community to translate its declared positions into practical steps that cut off the militia’s arms supply and funding, putting an end to their impunity. It asserted that ending the coup and supporting state institutions in asserting their authority are fundamental to protecting Yemenis and maintaining regional security, as well as ensuring freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb.
