Minister of Water and Environment Signs Agreement to Enhance Water and Sanitation Services

In a significant move to improve public health and resilience among vulnerable populations, the Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, signed an agreement today in the temporary capital of Aden. This agreement, made with Solidarités International, aims to implement a project focused on enhancing water and sanitation services in the districts of Hays, Mawza, Al-Mokha, and Al-Khokha. The total cost of the project amounts to one million and two hundred five thousand euros, with a duration of twelve months.

Project Funding and Objectives

This initiative receives funding from the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid (ECHO). It aligns with ongoing efforts to improve water services, sanitation, and living conditions for both residents and internally displaced persons in the targeted areas. Approximately fifty-five thousand six hundred thirty-four individuals, including displaced persons and the most vulnerable groups, will benefit from this project.

Integrated Interventions in Water and Health

The project encompasses a comprehensive package of interventions in water supply, sanitation, health, and nutrition. Key activities include rehabilitating four water supply systems and nine health facilities, constructing latrines, and providing hygiene supplies. Additionally, the project will train water and sanitation committees, enhancing their capacity to manage and maintain services effectively.

Health Awareness Campaigns

Moreover, the project will implement two hygiene and health awareness campaigns. These campaigns aim to reduce health risks, promote preventive measures, and increase community awareness and participation in maintaining public health and environmental standards.

Minister’s Call for Increased Humanitarian Efforts

Minister Al-Sharjabi emphasized the importance of such projects, especially given the challenging humanitarian conditions in the country. He urged humanitarian organizations and institutions to direct more of their interventions toward areas affected by the war instigated by Houthi militias. This approach will help alleviate the suffering of the population and improve their access to essential services, particularly in water, sanitation, and health.

Commitment from Solidarités International

The Country Director of Solidarités International highlighted the significance of the agreement in addressing humanitarian needs in the targeted regions. She reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Water and Environment to implement the project and support the most needy populations.

This agreement marks a crucial step toward enhancing water and sanitation services in Yemen, contributing to better health outcomes and improved living conditions for vulnerable communities.
