Minister Participates in High-Level Session

Today, during the International Climate Summit (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, Yemen’s Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, participated in a high-level session focused on building networks to enhance peace and resilience in climate-affected regions. This session was organized by the Audi Global Foundation.

Yemen’s Climate Challenges

Minister Al-Sharjabi emphasized Yemen’s determination to collaborate with global partners to address the impacts of climate change. He stressed the importance of developing comprehensive solutions to the climate crisis that involve all stakeholders. He highlighted that a just transition is a crucial aspect of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.

Yemen has faced significant climate challenges, experiencing six hurricanes in six years. In just one year, floods and heavy rains affected 30% of the country’s agricultural land, which is vital for a nation that heavily relies on agriculture. These factors contribute to Yemen being one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change.

Call for Increased Climate Financing

The minister underscored the necessity of facilitating access to climate financing for adaptation efforts in the most affected countries. He warned that these nations now confront existential threats due to worsening climate impacts, which exacerbate conflicts and undermine global stability.

Al-Sharjabi urged governments and international organizations to bridge the financing gap. He called for increased funding dedicated to climate adaptation, streamlined bureaucratic processes, and capacity building in developing countries. Furthermore, he emphasized the need to support national plans in developing and least developed nations, helping them transition to renewable energy and adopt green economies.

 

Minister Al-Sharjabi’s participation at COP29 underscores Yemen’s commitment to tackling climate change and fostering international cooperation. As the world faces escalating climate challenges, Yemen’s experiences and proactive stance serve as a vital reminder of the urgent need for collective action and robust funding to ensure a sustainable future for all.
