Minister Discusses Infrastructure Collaboration with UNOPS
In a significant meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, Minister of Public Works and Roads, Engineer Hussein Al-Aqrobi, engaged with Juan Carlos, a representative from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). The discussion focused on enhancing collaborative efforts and the progress of various projects, particularly the completion and handover of the Fifty Street project.
Capacity Building Initiatives
The meeting also included Rehana Zawar Ali, the UNOPS office director in Yemen. They reviewed the implementation of capacity-building projects within the Road and Bridge Maintenance Fund. The officials assessed the benefits of these initiatives and discussed the initiation of a pilot project to evaluate road assets in collaboration with the fund. This project aims to improve the efficiency of road management and maintenance.
Strengthening Partnerships
During the meeting, which also featured Engineer Walid Radman, the Roads Sector Undersecretary, Minister Al-Aqrobi praised the existing partnership with UNOPS. He highlighted the technical and institutional support provided to the ministry and the Road and Bridge Maintenance Fund. This support has positively impacted performance and enhanced operational mechanisms.
Commitment to International Cooperation
Minister Al-Aqrobi reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with international partners. He emphasized the importance of developing asset management systems and enhancing the skills of technical staff to align with best practices in the road sector. He also stressed the urgency of completing ongoing projects and ensuring they meet approved technical specifications, ultimately addressing citizens’ needs and improving infrastructure.

In response, the UNOPS representative confirmed the office’s dedication to continuing support for infrastructure projects in the road sector. He expressed a willingness to expand collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and the Road and Bridge Maintenance Fund, aiming to enhance institutional sustainability and improve project management efficiency.
