Minister of Planning and Central Bank Governor Discuss Sustainable Development with World Bank

In Washington, D.C., Dr. Waed Badhieb, Yemen’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, and Ahmed Ghaleb, the Governor of the Central Bank of Yemen, met today with Osman Diwan, the World Bank’s Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa. The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation and promoting sustainable development between Yemen and the World Bank.

Addressing Challenges and Opportunities

During the meeting, which also included Afrah Al-Zuba, the head of the Executive Unit for Accelerating Donor Aid Absorption, Minister Badhieb outlined the significant challenges facing Yemen. He emphasized the opportunities available for development and presented a comprehensive vision for restructuring existing projects funded by the International Development Association. He highlighted the need to improve implementation mechanisms to maximize developmental impact.

Balancing Emergency Response and Sustainable Development

Minister Badhieb stressed the importance of adopting a balanced approach that integrates emergency response with sustainable development. He called for increased investment in human capital, strengthening institutional resilience, and supporting productive economic sectors. Additionally, he urged the development and allocation of independent infrastructure projects, particularly in water, transport, and energy sectors.

Priorities for Monetary Sector Development

Governor Ghaleb provided insights into the priorities for developing Yemen’s monetary sector. He underscored the necessity of accelerating the implementation of a digital payment project in collaboration with the World Bank.

Commitment to Support Yemen’s Development

Osman Diwan commended the Yemeni government for its efforts in facilitating the execution of development projects and enhancing partnerships with the World Bank. He reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to supporting Yemen’s developmental endeavors, particularly in job creation and economic transformation.

Increasing World Bank Presence in Yemen

Both parties agreed on the importance of strengthening the World Bank’s presence in Yemen. They discussed increasing field missions to Aden and other provinces, with the Yemeni government ready to provide all necessary facilitation.

Continuing Collaborative Efforts

The meeting concluded with a strong commitment to continue close collaboration to achieve shared developmental goals and promote sustainable and inclusive development in Yemen.

This collaboration marks a significant step toward addressing Yemen’s pressing needs and fostering a resilient economic future.
