The Minister of Information stated that the Houthi escalation in Taiz reflects Iran’s directives, undermining peace efforts.

Houthi Escalation in Taiz Reflects Iranian Influence, Says Yemeni Minister

Yemen’s Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Muammar Al-Eryani, condemned the recent surge in violence in Taiz province. He attributed this escalation to the Iran-backed Houthi militias, which have intensified their attacks on civilian areas over the past 24 hours. Al-Eryani emphasized that these actions undermine peace efforts and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Targeting Civilian Areas

In a recent press statement, Al-Eryani detailed the Houthi assaults on residential neighborhoods. The militia targeted areas such as Al-Kamb, around Al-Khayr Mosque, and Al-Dabba. Additionally, they launched attacks on the eastern and western fronts of Taiz city using heavy artillery and munitions. The violence also extended to the eastern access point connecting Taiz and Al-Houban, as well as drone strikes on villages and homes in Wadi Al-Dabab, located west of the city.

Failed Military Incursion

Al-Eryani reported a failed attempt by the Houthis to infiltrate positions held by the Yemeni National Army near the Al-Tashrifat camp. The army successfully repelled this incursion, forcing Houthi fighters to retreat, leaving behind casualties among their ranks.

Civilian Casualties on the Rise

The minister noted that Houthi attacks in the previous month resulted in 24 civilian casualties, including both deaths and injuries. He highlighted that these brutal and deliberate assaults have led to the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians, including women and children, since the onset of the conflict. Al-Eryani criticized the international community’s silence, which he believes fails to address these violations seriously.

Call for International Action

Al-Eryani urged the international community, including the United Nations and its special envoy, to take concrete steps against the Houthi escalation. He called for a clear condemnation of the violence and the classification of the militia as a “global terrorist organization.” Additionally, he advocated for imposing strict sanctions, freezing their financial assets, and pursuing leaders involved in these violations. He stressed the need for enhanced support for the legitimate government to protect civilians and restore stability in affected areas.

The ongoing conflict in Yemen, particularly in Taiz, highlights the urgent need for international intervention. The recent Houthi attacks not only threaten the lives of civilians but also jeopardize any prospects for lasting peace in the region. As the situation escalates, the call for decisive action becomes increasingly critical to safeguard human rights and foster a path toward reconciliation in Yemen.
