In a significant meeting held today in Aden, Minister of Human Rights Mashdal Omar engaged with Amjad Al-Sharjabi, the Country Director of “Except International.” The discussion centered on strengthening collaboration in the realms of human rights and humanitarian efforts, especially concerning the rehabilitation of detainees and those forcibly disappeared.
The meeting delved into strategies aimed at enhancing partnerships to implement comprehensive programs and projects focused on rehabilitating individuals detained or forcibly disappeared by Houthi militias. These initiatives are crucial for addressing the psychological and social impacts that these individuals have suffered due to the violations they endured. Both parties explored the possibility of developing a comprehensive national policy dedicated to the rehabilitation and reintegration of this vulnerable group back into society.
Minister Mashdal emphasized the critical nature of this humanitarian issue, highlighting the necessity for both national and international efforts to confront the repercussions of these violations. He commended the ongoing initiatives of “Except International” in this sector and reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritizing the plight of detainees and the forcibly disappeared, acknowledging its humanitarian and national significance. He asserted that these efforts are vital for achieving justice and fostering societal peace.
Furthermore, the minister underscored the government’s substantial endeavors to secure the release of all detainees and those forcibly disappeared in Houthi prisons, reaffirming a commitment to the “all for all” principle in negotiations. He called for urgent international action to address the alarming trend of kidnappings and concealment of thousands of Yemenis by Houthi militias, which represents a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and human rights treaties.
In response, Amjad Al-Sharjabi reaffirmed “Except International’s” dedication to enhancing cooperation with the Ministry of Human Rights. He emphasized the importance of developing joint programs aimed at the psychological and social rehabilitation of detainees and the forcibly disappeared, while also building the capacities of relevant national entities to ensure an effective and sustainable response to this pressing humanitarian issue.
